NELSON HERNANDEZ

Punta Arenas, 1984

My production starts when I define myself as a painter; in that sense my work begins in the painting and the image painted, without seeking to problematize the act of painting, but rather, embracing the pictorial tradition to raise a question about the relationship of the painter and the portrait of his immediate reality.

Thematically, my paintings – essentially figurative – are inspired by everyday events. Using, as a reference, images that are mostly accidental or anecdotal, the result of walks in the city and chance encounters. Thus, the painting is fed by chance, to extract meaning and transform the worldly experience in the presence of the object found (or sky, or landscape), by dealing with these unexpected encounters with a profound technical euphuism and thoroughness that contrasts with its random origin.
